Welcome to the first edition of Culture Club – a behind-the-scenes peek into what makes life at The Impulse Group more than just work. Our BDM, Mark, has kicked off this series to share something we value just as much as subsea engineering expertise: our people.

Around here, culture isn’t a nice-to-have – it’s what keeps the ideas flowing, the team tight and the days a little more fun. This isn’t about buzzwords or beanbags. It’s about real connection, shared wins and a team that genuinely enjoys spending time together – even if it means battling it out over a game of darts.

At The Impulse Group, we’ve got an air hockey table in the office. A dartboard. A table football setup. We did not choose this position because we wanted to tick the ‘cool office’ box – we chose it because we genuinely enjoy spending time together.

After a meeting, someone usually says, “Fancy a quick game?” And just like that, we’ve gone from whiteboards and project meetings to shouting encouragement over a winning throw on the darts board. It’s not a perk. It’s part of our rhythm.

How we built a culture people actually enjoy

This is what engagement really looks like for us. We don’t believe culture is about bean bags and buzzwords. It’s about creating a space where people feel safe, trusted and valued – not just as employees, but as human beings.

Reading ‘Build It: The Rebel Playbook’, by Glenn Elliott and Debra Corey, reminded me that you don’t install real engagement. It’s something you grow. It’s about giving people the freedom to speak up, the tools to do great work and the space to be themselves.

No egos, just team work

That’s what we’ve built at The Impulse Group. We’re a tight-knit SME where voices are heard, opinions matter, and egos are left at the door. We treat our people, clients, and supply chain partners with the same honesty and respect – because the work only works if we work together.

Some days, that means collaborating on complex subsea solutions. On other days, it means resolving things with a fiercely competitive air hockey grudge match (all in good spirits). But it means showing up every day with openness, curiosity, and a genuine desire to do good work together.

We don’t do beanbags. We do belonging. So if you’re curious what engagement really looks like at our place, it’s a brainstorm followed by a game of darts. It’s asking, “What do you think?” and really listening. It’s not being afraid to challenge, laugh, lead or learn.

This is what makes The Impulse Group feel different. We’ve built a culture that fuels our performance, keeps us close-knit and creates the kind of energy you can’t fake. It’s not just about what we do – it’s how we do it, and who we do it with. If that sounds like your place, our door is always open.

Whether you’re thinking of joining the team, partnering with us on a project, or just curious about what it’s like on the inside – stay tuned for more from the Culture Club. I’ll be back soon with another peek into what makes our team tick.
