When a client calls with a time-critical need, there’s no room for hesitation.
That was the case recently when we received an urgent request to deploy a skilled engineer to the Ivory Coast to conduct two annulus riser pre-commissioning tests.
In this blog, we find out from our Senior Engineer, Matt Streeting, how he tackled the client’s challenge and avoided costly delays for their project.
Delivering under pressure: The client’s challenge
The client needed us to verify the integrity of the outer sheath post-installation, ensuring the annulus was dry and the riser system fit for full-service life.
The real challenge was a combination of delivering under pressure, logistics and technical precision.
Our solution
From receipt of the purchase order to Matt arriving in country took just five days. That’s not just fast, it is agile execution backed by robust systems, experienced personnel and a ‘no-fail’ mindset.
Our responsive deployment of engineering expertise meant the client:
Minimised costly project delays
Gained assurance on asset integrity
Achieved commissioning milestones on time
Matt, our deployed engineer, faced restricted annulus access and testing complexity on site, but stayed the course, adapted in real time and delivered accurate, reliable data to enable confident decision-making.
A timeline of deployment
Matt carried out pre-commissioning annulus testing on two new risers recently installed aboard the FPSO. This was a critical milestone in the project’s commissioning phase, and accuracy was essential.
Following his arrival in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, Matt quickly mobilised to conduct testing activities took place from Wednesday 7th May to Monday 12th May.
Proven capabilities
The client turned to The Impulse Group due to our:
Proven expertise in annulus testing
Rapid response capabilities
Unique test equipment capable of both positive and negative (vacuum) tests using the same setup
These advantages made us the ideal partner to tackle the job at speed, and without compromising quality.
Once in country, Matt conducted vent port flow tests and vacuum testing on the two newly installed risers. Testing was carried out in accordance with our rigorous procedures, aligned to global industry standards, including API 17B.
The testing was completed using The Impulse Group’s state-of-the-art Annulus Test Kit (ATK) – a robust and reliable tool that has become a cornerstone of our annulus integrity services.
Overcoming challenges
One of the risers initially presented erratic flow results, suggesting there might be a breach causing a filled annulus. Rather than jumping to conclusions, Matt initiated a series of sensitivity tests, including a positive pressure hold and volume measurements, to gather more data and eliminate false assumptions.
Through careful diagnosis and perseverance, he was able to successfully complete a vacuum test and confirm the integrity of the riser's outer sheath.
A positive outcome for the client
Matt quickly forged great relationships with Offshore Facilities Engineers on the client’s team who were impressed by Matt’s dedication, perseverance and the depth of expertise he demonstrated.
By identifying the issue and navigating the challenges with precision, he helped:
Utilise our state-of-the-art Annulus Test Kit to deliver accurate results
Avoid unnecessary investigation or repair work
Confirm that the riser met original design life expectations
Provide peace of mind that both risers passed testing and were fit for commissioning
The reliability of our equipment also stood out – our ATK maintained pressure flawlessly and enabled accurate monitoring throughout the operation.
